Recreational Ride Series for 2010

HI-USA, GATEWAY COUNCIL will sponsor six recreational rides beginning in May and ending in September. Plan now to complete the series. Challenge yourself, your family, and your friends!

COST: Each ride (except Tour de Stooges, Bike the Bridges, and Historic Carondolet Bike Tour) costs $10.00/adult, and $3 for children (12 yrs and younger).(see Tour de Stooges for different pricing. Bike the Bridges and Historic Carondolet Bike Tour are free because of the generous sponsorship of Great Rivers Greenway).

REGISTRATION: Registrations can be made online until noon the Friday before each scheduled ride. Registration can also be made at the event.

Sign-in is 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. for all rec. rides. Riders may start after they register and get their map/cue sheet.

All rec. rides include marked roads, maps/cue sheets, SAG support, and rest stops with snacks. All SAG support and rest stops end at 12:30p.m.

Helmets are mandatory, and all rides go rain or shine.


Tour-de-Stooges

Kick off your 2009 cycling season with some eye-poking, head-slapping fun! In this 13th edition of this annual ride and back for a third year in Highland, choose from routes of 15, 22, 31, 42, and 64 miles on flat to rolling rural Illinois roads in Madison, St. Clair and Clinton counties. Cygan-Delaney Catering, which received rave reviews last year, will be back again this year. Along with lunch you may watch all the slapstick comedy you can stand. Come see why this ride draws over 700 cyclists from 14 states each year. Ride goes rain or shine. Helmets are mandatory.

Cost: $20 for adults, $10 for children (includes lunch). Commemorative tee shirts cost $10.00 each and may be ordered on-line.

Bike the Bridges

Sunday June 6, 2010 Thanks to a generous grant from Great Rivers Greenway, this ride is FREE to all registered participants. Gateway Council of HI-USA has partnered with the St Louis Regional Federation of Bicyclists to offer a Confident Bike Riding Workshop before the ride (starting at 8:00a.m.) and a ride on one, two, three, or all three bridges over the Mississippi River. Light refreshments served afterwards. SAG support ends at noon. Ride goes rain or shine. Helmets are mandatory.

Location: Arch Parking Garage roof (you pay to park), 63101, is where this ride begins. Registration 7:30-8:30a.m. Bike Workshop begins at 8:00a.m. Ride starts for all at 8:30a.m.

Get Your Kicks on Route 66

Choose from four routes: the Jailhouse Rock (22 miles), Rock Around The Clock (31 miles), or the “challenge” route with serious climbs for experienced riders only, Great Balls Of Fire (42 miles). Rest your wazoo at one of our rest stops and listen to the sounds of Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, the Big Bopper and others. Dress ‘50s-style threads and peepers, but remember that helmets are mandatory during your ride. A special prize will be given to the first cyclist to complete the Rock Around The Clock route on the classic cruiser, the Schwinn Phantom. Enjoy this trip back in time, but don’t let us catch you playing some back seat bingo in the parking lot or we just might have to call the heat, Daddy-O!

Tour (Above) de Flood Plain

August 7 Saturday Tour (Above) de Flood Plain Ride your bike and tour the areas hardest hit by "The Great Floodof '93." Choose from four routes: Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head (10 miles), Purple Rain (20 miles), The Sky is Crying (35 miles), and Riders on the Storm (50 miles). Enjoy a leisurely ride over flat St Charles County roads with a rest stop in New Town and then onto Portag-des-Sioux. The Mississippi River covered the 20 foot base of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rivers and 50 lives were lost in that Great Flood.

Location: park just south and west of Granada Cyclery (follow the signs). Register at Granada Cyclery, 4798 North Service Rd, St Peters, MO, 63376, and begin your ride from their parking lot.

Cost: $10.00/adult; $3.00/child. T-shirt option for this ride has been discontinued. Register on the day of from 8:30a.m.-10:00a.m. Ride goes rain or shine; helmets are mandatory. SAG support and rest stops end at 12:30p.m.

Historic Carondolet Bike Tour

August 8 Sunday Historic Carondolet Bike Tour  Meet in Bellerieve Park and take a guided historic tour with Harold Karabell. Learn about one of the oldest historic neighborhoods in St Louis---once the independent village of Carondolet. French and German settlers built some of its oldest churches and limestone buildings. Light refreshments served after the ride.

Cost: FREE! This ride is underwritten by a genrous grant from Great Rivers Greenway. It is co-sponsored by HI-Gateway Council and The St Louis Regional Federation of Bicyclists. Registration begins at 8:00a.m. and riders shove off at 8:30a.m. This is a mass-start ride as riders will follow the leader to various stops along the route where architecture, history, and colorful personalities from the past will be explained. Riders are encouraged to ride single-file and obey all rules of the road from point-to-point. Ride goes rain or shine. Helmets are mandatory!

Location: Bellerieve Park in South St Louis City, 63118, overlooking the Mississippi River.

Johnny Appleseed Apple Pie Ride

Celebrate Johnny Appleseed’s birthday at Mills Apple Farm with this ideal family event. Choose from routes of 14, 27, or 38 miles. All three routes pass by orchards, farms, and small towns on rural roads that are flat or rolling. After the ride a farm wagon will take you to pick tree-ripened apples from Mills apple orchards. Pre-order a juicy apple pie from Mills Apple Farm at 618-887-4732 (regular, crumb or sugar free), or order a pie before you start riding and it will bake while you’re on the road. In addition, Mills Apple Farm has other traditional country items for sale, as well as a food stand with sandwiches and soft drinks. Born 237 years ago, Johny Appleseed made a name for himself by planting apple seeds across the country. Mills Apple Farm will commemorate his birthday with special events on this fun, family day.

Cost: $10.00/adult and $3.00/child. Registration on-line ends at noon, Friday before the ride. Registration at the event on the day it is held will be from 8:30a.m.-10:00a.m. The T-shirt option for this ride has been discontinued.
